After a slow Labor Day morning of sleeping in and drinking coffee, I went to work to make a special dinner to round out Isabella’s final birthday event. She requested Indian food, so I found a naan recipe online, whipped out the big mixer and let it knead and rise while I cooked the main dishes:

As the mixer churned, I pulled out some fresh ground beef to make for this week’s meal prep:

Then I started the chicken masala so it could simmer for a couple of hours. I added garam masala, turmeric, and a little bit of red chili powder:

My little helper was usually close by willing and ready to add ingredients or pick up the dough. Only one time did I have a close call of rescuing the naan from having hand soap squirted into it. 😂

I wanted to make an au gratin style casserole to freeze for dinner this week, so I had the littles help me with peeling and chopping the potatoes (one did the dishes!). They did a fabulous job and most of the work for prepping the potatoes!

After boiling a big pot of rice and a pound of lentils, it was time to make the naan. I LOVE this griddle that came with our stove:

My dad brought brats and buns for a taste of traditional cookout. This meal was certainly not your average Labor Day food! 😛

Throughout the day, I was trying to check things off my school to-do list, like creating these schedules for the younger kids:

By late afternoon, I wasn’t the only one feeling tired. 🙂

And although we broke almost every tradition otherwise, what Labor Day would be complete without watermelon on the back porch? 🙂

Could there be a more perfect way to say goodbye to our summer break? ❤️
